With the formation of German minority societies beginning in 1990, the Germans subsequently decided to take part in local, regional and national elections with their own candidates in order to take political responsibility for their native homeland.

Of special importance for the Germans is the actual local self-administration. In many counties, cities and communities within the Opole district, minority representatives are elected members of the local government. In the Opole regional parliament, the "German Minority" is currently part of the governing coalition.

Apart from its general goals of improving economic infrastructure and of abetting social problems, the "German Minority" engages especially in cultural and educational matters to promote the preservation of the region's multicultural character.

Consequently, the minority's deputies in the Polish Parliament promote the development of minority law protections and support the EU-integration process.

The election committee is not registered as a political party. Only during election times the committee regroups, representing the minority's de-mands in close cooperation with the Social/Cultural Society of the Germans in the Opole district.
